Outline of Khula-Sizwe and Salem Agribusiness Mentorship

We define rural development in terms of improved economic opportunity, enterprise and quality of life for rural South Africans.

As history has shown, there are many problems regarding development in rural communities. Emerging small-scale entrepreneurs who wish to enter in the market economy struggle to achieve a consistent supply of quality product above the critical mass required to gain market share at a competitive price.

Input costs and production volume, on the individual level, are factors that rule out viable enterprise when compared to large-scale commercial enterprise where volumes produced are large enough to reduce the cost of production per unit produced.

Salem Agribusiness Mentorship in association with Khula Sizwe is principally involved in addressing this problem by generating economically feasible rural projects within a community so as to engage sufficient entrepreneurs to achieve a critical production mass and then focusing on the needs of participating entrepreneurs. It is critical to realise that all economic enterprise exists as interaction between suppliers, producers and customers. This is what forms the basis of any value chain.
