Salem Agribusiness is a commercial agricultural operation based in Salem, near Grahamstown (between Port Elizabeth and East London) in the Eastern Cape. Our objective as a private commercial agricultural enterprise is to facilitate rural development along with other stakeholders based on mutually benefiacial business transactions within a commercial value chain.
Salem Agribusiness Mentorship aims to feed into an existing commercial value chain with projects, and have identified four main components of necessity to achieve this:
Linkages between commercial enterprises and small scale indigenous farmers can be of great benefit to the development of rural communities in Southern Africa. If all stakeholders in the development process work together, including government, with its’ emphasis on the empowerment of indigenous entrepreneurs and farmers, the local leadership, local churches and other governmental and non-governmental organizations in any area, the up-side will be enormous.
To avoid creating a dependency or entitlement mentality syndrome, we structure our projects and training to help people become independent after a specified time of working with us. We anticipate this to be between 18 months to 5 years, depending on the type of project and individual ability of participants.
Salem Agribusiness also recognize that there can be no true social or economic transformation without the empowerment of the whole person. To this end we work (ourselves, and with strategic partners) in the areas of spiritual development and life skills. We recognize the importance of good relationships in achieving this. The concept that forms the basis of Khula Sizwe grows out of the empowerment of individuals at production level within communities where accountability and responsibility issues are clear.
