New Horizons was established in late 2004 and most of 2005 was spent building the hatchery and feedmill and infrastructure such as roads, water, electricity and housing. In 2006 the hatchery and feedmill started and grew from about 3,000 chicks per week to 40,000 about the end of the year and about 250 tons of feed a month. A pilot project was started with 12 out growers receiving feed and chicks and selling onto the live market.
In February 2007 construction on an export quality abattoir started, and came on line in late February 2008. Since 2007 New Horizons had begun placing breeders and this started to bear fruit in late 2008 with all the fertilised eggs being supplied from these breeders. This has significantly reduced the cost of chick production. New Horizons is looking at effectively using their land for maize and soya production and the chicken manure for composting and fertilising the lands.
The original vision statement of New Horizons was that, "we exist to spread a passion for the supremacy of God in the transformation of rural communities in Northern Mozambique." New Horizons has become increasingly aware that this is so much bigger than any one company and is very excited about the concept of "communities of fusion" that is developing.
New Horizons is partnering with the New Frontiers group of churches from Zimbabwe and some key people from there will be moving to Nampula to set up an egg laying business, to be actively involved in church planting and discipleship development and to look at schools and education in the area. New Horizons' vision is to establish businesses, schools, churches, all seeking to think, work, act in God's way.
